Freedom of Bigotry

According to the jubilant Eva Brauns at the Concerned Women for America, Bush has promised to veto ENDA on religious freedom grounds. ENDA would not allow religious people to fire employees whose sexuality offends their sensibilities.

Never mind that gays have been and will continue to lose their employment merely for being gay. It is more important that religious people retain their right to be bigots than for discriminated minorities to have basic rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

I sometimes wonder if Bush would have vetoed the Emancipation Proclamation because it violated the plantation owner's religious beliefs that he is superior to blacks and therefore should be allowed to exploit them like cattle.

Living Nightmare with No End in Sight

Retired Lt. Gen. Sanchez, who led US forces in Iraq for the year after the 2003 invasion, including the capture of Saddam Hussein, describes Iraq as "a living nightmare with no end in sight". He described Bush's plan for Iraq as catastrophically flawed.

He described the current surge as ""a desperate attempt by the administration that has not accepted the political and economic realities of this war."

Sanchez Turns on Bush

Even Bush's handpicked officials think he is deluded and headed in the wrong direction in Iraq.

Hessian Thugs

More evidence that the Blackwater shooting of Iraqis was little more
than unprovoked murder. Contrary to Blackwater testimony, Kurdish
witnesses claim they saw no one firing on Blackwater mercenaries.
Blackwater claims it was in self-defense, but the Kurdish witnesses
called it an unprovoked massacre.

How long is the US going to allow Hessian thugs to run our military?

Al Gore: Nobel Peace Laureate

Gore wins the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on the Climate Crisis.

Gore also won an Oscar this year, a feat that maybe unprecedented. He's certainly one of the most successful former Vice Presidents in history.

To think, if Gore had actually gotten his full recount, he might be a lame duck president today. Then again, if he were president, I seriously doubt that we would be mired in Iraq, losing Afghanistan, and drowning in debt. The "lock box" doesn't sound so silly now, does it?

Give 'Em Heck, Harry!

Harry Reid gave a speech yesterday at BYU, telling BYU students that Mormon values are really Democratic values. As one student put it:

"I don't think you can call yourself a true Christian without caring for the poor."

I don't understand how Christianity went from taking care of each other and the planet to burning burning gays and feminists in effigy. Jesus never once mentions gays, but he does talk a lot about helping the poor and loving little creatures.

In many ways, I wonder how you can be a good Christian and vote Republican these days, and yet Democrats are left defending their religious beliefs as if Jesus only cared about tax cuts and antigay initiatives. When did Jesus become a Supply-Sider?

Utah Family Values

The Mormon-run state of Utah would rather destroy a family than recognize a stable, responsible gay relationship.

Four children are living with their uncle and his partner because their mother is a druggie and their father is AWOL. The State of Utah admits that no foster home can keep them together, but believes that living with openly gay relatives is a fate far worse than losing their family forever.

I guess Mormons believe families are forever, unless it includes gay people.
